If someone told me that I could live my life again free of depression provided I was willing to give up the gifts depression has given me—the depth of awareness, the expanded consciousness, the increased sensitivity, the awareness of limitation, the tenderness of love, the meaning of friendship, the appreciation of life, the joy of a passionate heart—I would say, ‘This is a Faustian bargain! Give me my depressions. Let the darkness descend. But do not take away the gifts that depression, with the help of some unseen hand, has dredged up from the deep ocean of my soul and strewn along the shores of my life. I can endure darkness if I must; but I cannot live without these gifts. I cannot live without my soul.’ — David N. Elkins, Beyond Religion, p. 188 (via arbitraryaffair)
And how hard is it to land even a minimum-wage job? This year, the Ivy League college admissions acceptance rate was 8.9%. Last year, when Walmart opened its first store in Washington, D.C., there were more than 23,000 applications for 600 jobs, which resulted in an acceptance rate of 2.6%, making the big box store about twice as selective as Harvard and five times as choosy as Cornell. Telling unemployed people to get off their couches (or out of the cars they live in or the shelters where they sleep) and get a job makes as much sense as telling them to go study at Harvard. Anonymous asked: I can't figure out why people aren't understanding this. If you're a trans woman, and you lived as a man for the first 20 years of your life, you were socialized male. End of story. There is no wiggle room so people's feelings don't get hurt, or so they don't have to bear the shame of male privilege. This is ridiculous. Neither trans men, nor trans women, MAGICALLY obtain the lived experience of their innate gender once they come out and/or transition. And you all KNOW THAT.
